She also sings for many soundtracks of Korean drama. She made her debut as an actress by joined the musical drama 2011 "Dream High".
Career
Music career
IU debuted on a Korean music program called M! Countdown in September 18, 2008. She released her first mini-album, Lost and Found, in which the most famous song was the title track, "Missing Child."[2] in September 23, 2008 However, the album was not commercially successful. It wasn't until her follow-up album that she succeeded in breaking into the mainstream. On April 16, 2009, IU launched her first full album, titled Growing Up, with the lead promotional number, "Boo." Within three weeks, "Boo" went up to the #1 contenders for SBS Inkigayo, and her name also went up twice on Take 7 together with other notable artists like SG Wannabe and Younha. The song also did well on KBS Music Bank K-Chart, on Mnet M!Countdown chart, and on various online music charts.[citation needed]In 2009, IU sang the ending title song, "Araro" for the acclaimed MBC drama, Queen Seon Duk, where she was recommended by the music director of the drama, citing her "clear tone and her lyrical sensibility."[3] She was also featured on Mighty Mouth's album Love Class in the song "희망사항." In late 2009, IU recorded MC Mong's song "Love Letter For You (Neoyege Sseuneun Pyeonji)," featuring SHINee's Key as a rapper in the song.
IU recorded the song "잔소리" (Nagging / Scolded) with 2AM's Seulong for the TV show We Got Married. On June 27, 2010, IU won her first award since her debut on SBS Inkigayo for "Nagging." On July 2, 2010, she won another award for that song on KBS Music Bank K-Chart. Soon after, IU was chosen to sing the main OST song for the MBC drama Road No.1 titled "여자라서" (Because I'm A Woman). IU's other collaborations include duets with Yoo Seung Ho ("사랑을 믿어요" (Believe in Love)), Sung Shi Kyung ("그대네요" (It’s You)), and Big Bang's Seungri ("I Know").[citation needed]
IU worked with some of South Korea's most famous musicians and producers for her third mini-album, “REAL,“ released in December 2010.[4] Lee Min Soo and Kim Lee Na, the creators of IU's previous hit, ‘Nagging‘, helped produce her award-winning song "좋은 날" (‘A Good Day‘), together with Shin Sa Dong Tiger and lyricist Choi Gab Won.[citation needed] IU received three SBS Inkigayo Mutizen awards for her performances of the song (on December 18 and December 26, 2010, and January 2, 2011), three awards from KBS Music Bank K-Chart (on December 24 and December 31, 2010, and January 7, 2011), and one award from Mnet M!Countdown on December 23, 2010.[citation needed]
IU often covers other pop artists' songs with her guitar and features her friend Thunder from MBLAQ, most notably renditions of SHINee "Juliette," Big Bang "Lies," Super Junior "Sorry, Sorry" and Girls' Generation "Gee."[5]
Soribada, an online music service, combined the music downloads and streams from January 1 to March 30, 2011, to name IU's song, "Good Day" as the number one song of the first quarter. Her song "Someday" from KBS's "Dream High" OST and her ballad "The Story Only I Didn’t Know" placed 4th and 7th place, respectively – showing that IU got 3 of the top 10 digital spots for the first quarter.
IU also recently also sang a self composed OST called "Hold my Hand" for drama series The Greatest Love.
It was revealed that her next comeback will be in November 2011.
Other activities
In August 2009, IU became a host for the new program Gom Music Chart on GomTV, a weekly show, where South Korean netizens vote for their favorite songs on the charts.[citation needed] For a time, IU became a fixed guest on Super Junior's Kiss the Radio, Maybee's Raise the Volume, and MBC's Starry Night (hosted by Park Kyung-lim and Shin Young) and Chin Chin Radio (hosted by Taeyeon). Upon Taeyeon's departure, she was chosen as a temporary DJ for two weeks together with B2ST member Doojoon.[citation needed] IU is currently the VJ for MBC Game’s Star for You, as well as for GomTV’s Starcraft 2 Global StarLeague, on which she introduces competing players.[6] IU is also one of twelve original female cast members chosen for the SBS variety show Heroes.[7]IU has secured a number of endorsement deals,[8] including the 2011 UNIONBAY clothing line (with Seo In-Kook),[9] MyChew candy, and the action-riding game "The Story of My Horse and I, Alicia." In 2011, IU became the next pop star spokesmodel for Mexicana Chicken.[10] Samsung selected IU to represent their Anycall brand, previously endorsed by such stars as Lee Hyori, BoA, and Junki, stating "we believe that [IU] has the potential to create a big bang within the industry."[11]
Most recently, IU has taken up a role as ‘Kim Pil Suk’ in the KBS 2TV teen drama series Dream High.[12]
On February 6, 2011, it was announced that IU would be a guest performer for British contemporary jazz & soul singer, Corinne Bailey Rae, during her 1st Korean concert.[13] She has also recently been featured in K-Will's music video for his song "My Heart is Beating" along with MBLAQ’s Lee Joon.
Lately, IU has been filming for SBS's "Kiss & Cry," where singers show off their figure skating skills. However, was eliminated on episode 8.
IU was also scheduled to have a comeback by the end of August 2011, but will be postponed to early November in the same year.

Lesson 7 - Korean Names and Topics
In Korean, when you want to address men politely, one would use the word songsaegnim attached to their surname or full name, this literally means teacher.
For example, one would say Yoo Songsaegnim or with the full name Yoo SangHyun Songsaegnim.
It is not possible to a Korean persons first name, such like SangHyun Songsaegnim. For that same reason, when you use the ssi, you cannot say Yoo-ssi, or Yoo SangHyun-ssi, but would rather say SangHyun-ssi.
Addressing Korean women, in Korea women do not take their husbands surname when they get married.
For example if Mrs Han is married to Mr Kim, then she may referred to as Kim songsaengnim-puin (Kim mr-wife), or she maybe reffered to in a similar English terminology such as Misesu Han(Mrs Han).
If you want to say A is B(like "This is a Korean book"):-
A B-ieyo (or B-eyo)
this Korean book-ieyo
It is obvious that you would use -eyo when B ends in a vowel, but -ieyo when B ends on a consonant.
songsaengnim-ieyo (is teacher)
soju-eyo (is soju)
IMPORTANT to note that in Korean the copula is only used to describe when this "is equivalent to".
It cant be used to say "is located in"(is underneath", "is near") nor can it be used to say "is a certain way" (i.e "is red", "is happy").
Ottaeyo means is how?, as in:
songsaengnim ottaeyo? ( How is teacher ? or What is teacher like? )
saob ottaeyo? (How is business? or What is business like?)
Kuraeyo literally means "it is like that", and may be used as a statement such as "it's like that", "thats right", "it is".
On the other hand it may be used as a question Kuraeyo? meaning "is it like that?", "really?" or "is that so?".
Korean has a special particle, used in attachment to place emphasis on what is being talked about.
by adding -un or nun, it makes As for Business or As for me.
-nun is attached to a noun, whereas -un is attached to a vowel. EG soju-nun (as for soju), Songsaengnim-un (as for teacher).

Using Copula to describe "this is that"
In Korean, if you want to describe A is B , you will have to use special verbs called copula. In Korea, this copula is present at the end of a sentence, and behaves a little differently to ordinary verbs. If you want to say A is B(like "This is a Korean book"):-
A B-ieyo (or B-eyo)
this Korean book-ieyo
It is obvious that you would use -eyo when B ends in a vowel, but -ieyo when B ends on a consonant.

Describing how things are
Korean possess words which mean "is a certain way".Ottaeyo means is how?, as in:
songsaengnim ottaeyo? ( How is teacher ? or What is teacher like? )
saob ottaeyo? (How is business? or What is business like?)

Lesson 6 - Asking for things
There Are / There is
The Korean verb which means either "there are" and "there is" is issoyo ( 있 어요 )They are dependent on the context in which you use them, and on what you are talking about. The stem of the verb is iss- with the inclusion of o and the polite particle -yo, thus forming the ending -oyo. However in the case where the verb stem ends in vowel, we use -a or -o, such as -ayo.
Vowel stem | - yo | ||
Consonant stem | - ayo | if the last vowel ends with -a or -o
Consonant Stem | - oyo |
In context the oppposite of iss- is ops- which literally means "there isnt" or "there arent".
Uses of the verbs
chogi issoyo means "it exist over there", or "its over there"Issoyo on its own can mean "I have/he has"
Opsoyo means "I dont have" or "I havent got"
In a shop
When addressing a shop keeper or waiters, Koreans use ajossi literally meaning uncle, but is used as a general word when addressing someone in a shop. However if it were to be used in a formal way, it is only for the referral of a man,
For females the word ajumma meaning aunt is used, for people over 35-ish, and for younger woman agassi is used for young women.
In Korean, we use a particle which comes after a noun that it relates to, such as na-do (me-too).
In English, it is the opposite, we would say 'with-me', whereas Korean is 'me-with'.
Using 'and'
In Korean, the word for and is -hago, this is a particle so when it is to be used it must be attached to a noun. For example, when you say 'burger and chips', in Korean it would be 'burger-hago chips. The word hago becomes part of burger. The particle hago can also mean with such as, Doojin-hago shinae-e kayo meaning 'I am going to town with Doojin'.
Ordering with numbers
When asking for 'one' item we say 'hana' which is said after you have selected the meal you wish to order. For example we would say, soju hana chuseyo meaning "soju one give me please".The word chuseyo utilises the polite word stem -yo, attached to chu-, which means "give me please"

Lesson 5 - Sentence Structure and order
Korean Sentence Structure and Word order
In Korean the structure of sentence differ to English sentences, for example the phrase Chal Chinaessooyo literally means "Well have you been getting on?" which is the opposite from English. In general the structure of the Korean sentences is broken down as subject - object - verb
"Jon the ball kicked"
"To Go" in order to do sentencesThere are a few words that you may add to the end of verb stems at the end of sentences, these include -yo which makes sentences polite, and -ro which means "in order to".In some cases the verb stems may in effect end in consonants in which case -uro is utilised. The order of the sentences for an example sentence of "in order to buy bread I am goin to the shops" is restructured as "bread buy-in order-to the shops go" In Korean unlike English, the subject of the sentences is optional like "I", then the "in order section" is next, which is then followed by "the place you are going".
* The construction can only be used in verbs involving 'going' and 'coming' and cannot be used with other verbs at the end of sentences.
